Biography
Dr Mejia is a leading expert in the epidemiology and risk factors of cardiovascular disease in Argentina and the Latin America. Dr. Mejía participated as Co-Pi in the “Tobacco Use Among Argentinean Youth: A Cohort Study” and P.I. at the “Tobacco Control Research and Training in South America Project”, at the “Cinema smoking and youth smoking in Latin America Project” both funded by Fogarty/NIH, and the project “An Evidence Base for Policies to Reduce SSB Consumption in Argentina” funded by IDRC, Canada. From April 2018 to December 2019 he was the Director of Health Research at the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Argentina where he was responsible for conducting the ministry's research policies and coordinating the implementation and evaluation of calls for research projects promoted by the ministry. Currently, Dr Mejia is Chief of the Department of Ambulatory Care at the Hospital de Clinicas, Universidad de Buenos Aires, the most prestigious hospital in Argentina. Dr. Mejia graduated with honors from the University of Buenos Aires and later obtained a Doctorate in Medical Humanities. In 2008 he received the Global Health Leadership Award from the Global Health Research Initiative, Canada, through he directed the “Mentoring in Tobacco Control Research in Argentina”. Project. He is the lead investigator at CEDES focused on cardiovascular epidemiology and risk factors and leads and active research team studying the cost-effectiveness of interventions such as the implementation of tobacco control laws or salt reduction in processed foods aimed to reduce cardiovascular risks in Argentina. He has a strong background in mentoring, he has mentored over 30 junior researchers in Argentina and the US over his 20 years as a senior investigator and 100 peer-reviewed papers were published by his group since 2001, most in international journals.

Médico, Diploma de Honor de la Facultad de Medicina, Doctor de la Universidad de Buenos Aires área Humanidades Médicas.. Investigador titular del CEDES desde 2011. Investigador Adjunto del CONICET. Jefe del departamento de Atención Ambulatoria del Hospital de Clínicas de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Durante 2018 y 2019 se desempeñó como Director de Investigación para la Salud, Ministerio de Salud de la Nación. Desde 2002 ha participado como investigador principal en proyectos de investigación en control de tabaco y Enfermedades Crónicas no Transmisibles, en proyectos financiados por el National Institute of Health (NIH) , EEUU y el International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. En 2006 participó de un programa de entrenamiento en Mentoría y Liderazgo organizado por el International Development Research Centre, Canadá, y en 2008 fue beneficiario de la Beca para Liderazgo en Salud Mundial de Canadá. Durante la beca implementó el Programa de Mentoría para la Investigación en Control de Tabaco en Argentina. Ha sido presidente de la Sociedad Argentina de Medicina Interna General, y co-chair del Resource Group on Mentoring de la Canadian Coalition for Global Health research y es miembro de la Society of General Internal Medicine, Estados Unidos.
